Visitors from all over the worki come to Cracow to admire historical architecture - Romanesąuc, Gothic, Renaissance, baroque and morę. But morę and morę often yisitors want to see another unique aspect of thc city- the monumental, socislrealist district of Nowa Huta. Plannedasacompletelynew town, built from scratch according to a single plan. Nowa Huta was enyisaged by the policy makers of the Stalinist era as a political and social counterbalance to bourgeois and anti-communist Cracow. The plans however did nol work, and Nowa Huta became in time one ot the strongestcentresof the socialresistance which led to thefoundationofthe • Solidarity movement and the political breaklhrough in central Europę- The development was started in the middle of nowhcre east of Cracow at the end of the 194Gs. The blockof flats which were built were to house the workers of a huge metallurgical complex, the construction of which began in April 1950 and which at its peak employed 30,000 people.Nowa Huta was raodelled urbanely on the broad principles of baroąue residences such as Yersaillcs, Five broad alleys branch radially from Plac Centralny, leading for esample to the centre of Cracow and to the metallurgical comples, Surrounded by beautiful verdure, the architecture of individual buildings, with their numcrous columns, attics and arcades, is reminiscent of the Renaissance style. The uniqueness of this architecture is attracting tourists, who thanks lo several tour operators can expericnce a little of the everyday life of the days of social rcalism. |
