Sigsmund's Column - a secular monument
dedicated in honour of King Sigismund III Waza who made Warsaw the
capital of Poland. This column is as well the symbol of the city as the
first Polish monument. It originated in 1644 at Władysław's IV
suggestion in order to commemorate his father's deeds and strengthen
his glorious picture of the King. During the stormy history of the
capital, as well the column as the whole Old Town (Starówka) were
destroyed. The remaining parts of the column have been located next to
the Royal Castle (you can still see and touch them). Sigismund's Column
is an excellent landmark. Thus, it shouldn't be surprising how many
Varsovians arrange their meetings "at 9 p.m." by the column.
